Well, it’s bad news for Amazon Mom members. They are making changes to the Amazon Mom program, effective January 24, 2012. If you have attempted to sign up for Amazon Mom and were put on a waiting list, the good news is that it appears that they will once again be accepting new members later this winter. However, the program is going to change.
Here is a summary of the changes:
- Starting on January 24, 2012, the maximum discount available on diapers and wipes subscriptions will be 20%. This includes a 5% Subscribe & Save discount and an additional 15% exclusively for Amazon Mom members.
- New customers who join Amazon Mom in 2012 will get three months of FREE Two-Day Shipping benefits (AKA Amazon Prime). Any current Amazon Mom members are still eligible to continue earning up to one year total of FREE Two-Day Shipping benefits.
- Once the free period is over, customers can join Amazon Prime for $79/year to continue to receive full access to Amazon Mom and Amazon Prime benefits.
I have been a member of Amazon Mom since they started the program back in September 2010. Under the initial program, for every $25 you spent on baby products, you would gain an extra month of Prime benefits. So, with a little one in diapers, I was quickly able to max out the FREE year of Prime from Amazon. Unfortunately, it looks like they are discontinuing the “Prime Extension” offer. :(
So, should you pay $79 for Amazon Prime to keep the Amazon Mom and extra 15% off Diapers & Wipes benefits? That one is going to be entirely up to you. I have been comparing diaper and wipe prices for several years now and Amazon Mom with Subscribe & Save changed how I shopped for diapers. Unless there was an awesome in-store sale with coupon, I could often get my diapers cheaper at Amazon. If you do a lot of shopping at Amazon and enjoy the FREE shipping that Prime would give you, then it may be something to really consider.
So, what are your thoughts on this big change?

I just re-upped my Prime after my 1 yr free ended. I was still getting the Amazon Mom benefits, but even with the subscribe and save, I didn’t get 2 day shipping and so it literally took over one week to get my diapers. I too have done the math and unless I can couple a sale with a coupon, Amazon can’t be beat for diapers/wipes. They make Pampers more affordable than Target brand! So, my husband gave me a year of Prime for my anniversary. Well, he is still giving me a more normal gift, but he knew I wouldn’t pay the $79 otherwise and I was just beside myself without it! You can’t beat the no-tax either (which as I hear, may not last much longer).
Oh I just got this email a little while ago – what a bummer!!! I’m pretty sure I won’t be paying the $79 for Amazon Prime… I’m a big online shopper, but I usually find free shipping deals anyway, or the price is so good that I can deal with the shipping charges. I have TWO in diapers (though I’m hoping one will be potty trained here soon!) and really love the convenience of having the diapers shipped right here to work. The price is great and no tax. But I’ll buy diapers wherever I can find them the cheapest. I have a feeling it’s back to BRU with coupons and their gift card deals, Costco is another option, I also get some good deals with CVS ECB’s.
I’m pregnant with my 3rd and have been doing amazon’s luvs diapers since my 2nd child. This makes me SO sad. A box of 234 diapers for $26 usually lasts me a month- 2 months including putting my 2 1/2 year old in one every night. Guess I’ll go back to couponing, and spending more, and trying to get to whatever store has the deal that week with our ONE car that is with my husband most of the day…
not happy w amazon. feels like a bait and swtich on their consumers…
I just saw this too http://www.change.org/petitions/amazoncom-ceo-remove-the-79year-charge-for-amazon-mom-and-restore-the-original-program# a petition to the CEO to change it back!
Just signed the petition. Thanks for spreading the word, Noel.
Totally agree with Sai – definitely a bait and switch but I know it was it was too good to be true to last.
I wonder if you could team up with 3 other mom friends or friends in general. I know that the prime membership shipping deal can be shared with 3 other “family” members. Could you split the amount between 4 people. I do this with my costco membership.
I feel like Amazon knew exactly what they were doing when they got moms hooked on their coupons and the free Prime trial. Then they take it all away and lower the discount. Well no wonder we are mad! We are used to getting a great deal! I think it’s a very bad business model and one that doesn’t promote loyal shoppers. I know I have bought ONE thing off of Amazon since my free Prime ran out three months ago and that’s because I couldn’t find the item anywhere else!
I will go back to using my coupons and combining sales at Target. At least there I am rewarded for my loyalty, not let down.
